Maintaining Your Concrete Driveway

Quite likely one of the reasons you invested in having a concrete driveway installed at your home was your expectation a concrete driveway would need very little maintenance and upkeep. While in general that's true and a concrete driveway does need substantially less maintenance then an asphalt drive, there is still a certain amount of maintenance necessary even with a concrete driveway.

Turn a blank wall opposite any window into a live action wallpaper by effectively turning the entire room into a giant camera obscura. The view from your window will be projected (upside down) onto the opposite wall with the use of only a bit of cardboard, tape, and a lens available from your local optician. The effect is pretty cool - but wouldn't it be possible to flip the image right side up again by using a second lens? [via]

Random Recast - New Uses for Aluminum Foil Round-Up

Filed under:

Welcome to the very first edition of Random Recast! Each week, Random Recast will feature a new-use-a-day for a common household item. Got any ideas you'd like to share? Leave a comment!

Today is our last installment of the aluminum foil edition of Random Recast...and I've saved my favorite use for last! This time we're going to be using foil to "repair" a mirror that has been desilvered in spots. It's not a permanent fix, but a convenient one.

Whether its from age or humidity, weird spots can detract from the beauty of a mirror. When you spot a few on your favorite looking glass, reach for aluminum foil. Just tape it to the back of the frame (not on the mirror itself) with the shiny side facing out. It'll "fill in" flaws and reflect light similarly to the mirror finish.

Missed the other Random Recast posts? Here's a little catch-up for you...

Day #4: Embossed Card Embellishment
Forget shelling out for specialty metallic papers to use in your scrapbooking or card making projects. Aluminum foil can be embossed and tinted, making it very versatile for crafting.

Day #3: Paper Punch Sharpener
If your specialty paper punch requires a bit too much effort to use, the die might just be a little dull. Sharpen it by punching through aluminum foil and parchment paper.

Day #2: Bring Delicate Fabrics Back to Life
For materials that can't take too much heat, make your own "steamer" by topping your ironing board with aluminum foil. Then, place the garment onto the foil and smooth with an iron set on the steam function.

Day #1: Remove Rust From Chrome
Noticed a few spots of rust on the chrome features of your bike or car? Simply rub over the rusty area with a ball of aluminum foil (shiny-side out) dipped in water. Once you see a few dark circles appear, clean and buff to a like-new finish.

Lawn Care for Lazy People

Put down that weed wacker and back away from the lawn mower. Turns out less work equals a more beautiful yard. Don't believe me? Check out these laid-back lawn care tips.

lawn-careGetty Images

Lazy Lawn Care Secret #1: Mow Less Often
Bookmark this as your pass the next time the dreaded lawn care chore comes up on your to-do list. Keeping grass a little bit on the taller side (about 3", according to organic lawn care experts) improves soil's moisture retention. Plus, the taller blades shade soil and block weeds like crabgrass from getting their share of sun.

Lazy Lawn Care Secret #2: Leave Grass Clippings on the Lawn
Yeah, the idea of raking during warm months doesn't appeal to us either. So instead of whisking away those grass clippings, leave them on the lawn. They'll break down and return nutrients to the soil, saving you the extra work of fertilizing.

Lazy Lawn Care Secret #3: Water When You Wake Up
Timing this task to the early morning hours prevents the almost-instant evaporation that happens as you water during high-sun hours. And if you procrastinated until evening, the moisture will attract bacteria and insects. Another benefit to morning watering: It trains the grass to maximize efficiency of the water used, so your lawn will become more drought-resistant over time.

Lazy Lawn Care Secret #4: And While We're At It, Water Less Often
As the temperate climbs, so does the temptation to drench the grass with water multiple times a day. Don't do it. The top layer of grass will stay soaked, but the water won't get to the roots. So, bust out the hose three times a week, not every day. (And if you get hit by rainstorms resulting in an inch of water or more, you won't have to water at all that week.)

Lazy Lawn Care Secret #5: Prevent Weeds Now
No one's idea of a good time is to hunch over their grass, pulling out weeds. One way to save yourself that hassle is to apply pre-emergent weed control ASAP. The stuff prevents weeds from germinating in the first place. (You will have to reapply it in three months though, but that's not too terrible.)

High-Design Hack - Make a Pillow Inspired by Moschino Maison's Sweet Room

Filed under:

Once in a while I come across an amazing item that often ends up being "not for sale" or just prohibitively expensive. Not one to be deterred, I do my best to find a way to recreate ("hack") the coveted object in question. And that, my friends, is a High-Design Hack.

make-a-pillowMaison Moschino

My current design obsession is Maison Moschino, a hotel in in Milan that features some very inventive rooms. Such as: The Sweet Room, which is filled with decorations that resemble baked goods and candy. Yep, it makes you hungry just to look at it. What caught my eye was the cupcake pillow on the bed. Before we go into how to make a pillow like this, let's take a closer look...

make-a-pillowMaison Moschino

Cute. I think the best approach to making a pillow like this is by carving the bottom part out of upholstery foam, then covering with felt in a solid "cake" color (like chocolate). For the liner, wrap the sides of the covered "cake" with a neutral felt. To create the icing, create a round pillow using white fabric and Poly-Fil, then stitch to the cake. A small red pillow makes the cherry. For a less abstract method to make a pillow that looks like a cupcake, check out this free pattern at SewDaily.

Creating Your Own Geocache

200908230310.jpg

If you've never heard of geocaching, you're in for a treat. Chances are that you have a few geocaches right in your own neighborhood. These mini-treasure boxes can be found with GPS coordinates downloaded from the geocaching website and can be a fun way to get outdoors and try something new. All you need is a GPS - even a capable smartphone will do the trick.

After you've found a few caches, it's a good idea to contribute to the sport by making one of your own. Geoaching.com offers a great tutorial on putting together your first cache and finding a good hiding place for it.
